CATCHING UP WITH CYRUS SUTTON'S ISLAND EARTH TOUR

CATCHING UP WITH CYRUS SUTTON'S ISLAND EARTH TOUR

The pilot’s voice on the plane’s intercom was flat and dejected. “We apologize for the delay in your departure. We know many of you will be missing your connecting flights. There will be a service representative to assist you as soon as you land.” This would translate to two hours in line at midnight to get my bag off the flight only to find out after another couple hours waiting at the baggage terminal that my bag had been accidentally sent across the country. At the time of writing this I still don’t know the exact whereabouts of the the suit case containing my projector.

It’s been two months on road. Eight rental cars and eighteen screenings across Hawaii and Australia of my new documentary Island Earth under my belt. It’s a film about a young Hawaiian scientist's struggle for truth between science and tradition as he grapples with the decision to join the GMO industry in Hawaii. The tour has taken me to large theaters, community halls and film festivals filled with farmers, surfers and community activists. Hawaii is basically being used as testing ground for some of the most dangerous concoctions of pesticides known to man. And it’s being done so outdoors next to school, homes and rivers. Long discussions usually follow each showing about local issues impacting the people at each venue and how the actions of the individuals in the film apply to their area. It’s been a grueling schedule of grass-roots promotion, event setup/breakdown and travel. Luckily the surf gods provided at nearly every stop and I logged some healthy water time. On both sides of the Big Island I got fun, rippable short board surf. On Maui I got well-overhead chunky dumpers. And in Australia, after their flat, hot and dry summer, the waves and winds switched on and offered two straight weeks of perfect peelers. Always borrowing boards, it’s a fun challenge to get away from the equipment I’m used to and learn some unfamiliar curves. It felt great to get out from behind a computer to walk, talk and surf. Aside from the surf I got to visit with farmers and take more ideas for my own property back in the Pacific Northwest.

Now back in Washington, I’m resting up for the second leg of the tour on the West Coast. This winter was particularly brutal in the PNW peppering the valley I reside with downed trees and branches. There’s lot of work ahead to clear the back two and half acres of my property from the carnage. A long summer awaits filled with milling logs, working in the garden and SUPing on the river in front of my house. But for now I’m catching up on sleep and gearing up for twenty-three screenings between San Diego and British Columbia. This time I’ll have my van, my boards, pup (and hopefully my projector) with me.
